Cleft : Operation for Improving the Speech

This type of operations are required when even after a good palate operation, the child has some nasal voice. To correct this, the upper part of throat of the child is narrowed by adjusting the inner skin and muscles of the throat. When facilities are available, it is advisable to decide the exact amount of narrowing required by doing a procedure known as nasoendoscopy. In this procedure, a small flexible tube with light source is passed inside the nose. The child is then asked to speak. The gap that remains between the soft palate and the wall of the throat during the speech is recorded on a video and is measured. The operation is then tailored to correct the gap. This investigation is generally done in collaboration with the ENT surgeon.
